Rising Sun gives visual effects students Hollywood experience

By Celia Clennett

You may not have known it at the time, but if you saw major Hollywood blockbusters The Hunger Games, Gravity and X-Men: Day of Future Past, then you were watching the visual effects of South Australian company Rising Sun Pictures.

Founded in Adelaide in 1995, Rising Sun is internationally-renowned for providing clients with cutting-edge effects. Their work on X-Men even earned them a 2015 Academy Award nomination.

Rising Sun is also playing a key role in developing the next generation of visual effects pros. Two years ago they launched an intensive 10-week course in partnership with Flinders University, aimed at providing eager visual effects students with unique real-world experience.

The Rising Sun team had realised that most courses did not offer adequate hands-on experience in a realistic industry environment. So they developed a course that offered students unprecedented access to its employees. That access means students can learn technical and creative techniques from highly-skilled professionals working on some of the world’s biggest films. The course incorporates the latest tools and techniques required to achieve high quality effects for professional production.

In addition to the valuable insights students gain, the course adds significant weight to their Flinders University degrees. And while the course doesn’t guarantee a dream job, several of the students have gone on to secure work at Rising Sun Pictures.
