Country greengrocer’s recipe for success

By Gretel Sneath

It’s rated as one of regional South Australia’s largest food bowls courtesy of a highly diverse menu of fruits from the land and sea.

And Limestone Coast gourmet greengrocer, She’s Apples, is among the local businesses championing the cause as it recently underwent a major expansion in order to squeeze in more local produce.

Foodland may be the mighty South Aussies, but in the south-eastern corner of the State, She’s Apples is the independent Mount Gambier store on everybody’s lips.

The business supports at least 24 local suppliers who are pouring their heart and soul into ready-made meals, cheeses, honey, milk, coffee and even toffee, along with a seasonal smorgasbord of fruit and vegetables from the region’s fertile paddocks.

She’s Apples manager, Phil Telfer, says it’s a privilege to be able to support other local businesses when their wares are so terrific.

“We are able to produce such top quality food down here, and when it comes to value-adding, I think the local producers do it just as well as anyone – they’re certainly dedicated to what they do, and like us, they are listening to their customers and delivering what people are asking for,” he says.

Three times a week, the She’s Apples semi-trailer rolls into town filled with additional goods hand-selected from the Adelaide Produce Markets, so that customers can enjoy everything city shoppers can access – and more. Hundreds of bulk bin lines further add to the gourmet offering, while a new central café serving Robe’s award-winning Mahalia Coffee has been an instant success.

“We still want to be known as a greengrocer because fresh produce has always been at the core of our business, so we have tried to incorporate products that complement this,” Phil says. “The shelves are constantly being replenished by our 33 staff; being a small business, we take great pride in what we do and our customers can see that.”

Some of those customers have been with She’s Apples ever since it opened in 1989, and their loyal support is reflected in the store’s growth.

“From young families to cafes and restaurants, our customers are the driving force for the direction of the business,” Phil says.

The store’s incredible success is proof that the customer is always right.
