7 ways to choose SA at the Show

By Lana Guineay

It’s that time of year again! September is almost here and that means two things: spring is in the air (we hope), and the Royal Adelaide Show is set to take over the Adelaide Showground.

From nostalgic favourites to new thrills, the Show is a much-loved event on the local calendar, with around half a million South Aussies (that’s 29% of us) attending every year. Even better, it’s a showcase of all things South Australian. From animals to local produce, displays to show bags, it’s a 10-day celebration of the best of the state and it has a $165.1 million economic impact along the way.

To help you choose South Australian, support local jobs and the people who make the Show such a local favourite, we’ve put together six ways you can choose SA at this year’s Show:

1. Chooseday
On Tuesday September 5th, aka Chooseday, I Choose SA and the Royal Adelaide Show have teamed up for a day all about making a difference by choosing local. There will be freebies including stickers, temporary tattoos, and FruChocs, as well as huge prize packs up for grabs. Follow on Facebook or Instagram for details of our big giveaway, and if you’re at the show on the day, use the I Choose SA snapchat filter and keep an eye out for the I Choose SA staff who will be wandering around with Mr FruChocs (you can’t miss him. He’s a giant FruChoc with legs).

2. Golden North
Ice cream makes everything better, scientific fact. SA ice-cream makers Golden North have been around for 90 years, and this year they’re the official provider at the Show, serving up their famous sweet treats made from cream and milk from local dairy farmers. Pop up vans will be dishing out Swings, Giant Twins and soft serve, and they also have a stage with free entertainment and a daily ice cream eating competition – winners score a year’s supply of ice cream.

3. Foodland pavilion
Head over to the Foodland Pavilion for a taste (and then some…) of SA’s amazing produce. Home of TasteSA, it will be a one-stop showcase of some of the state’s finest produce, featuring everything from toffee to whisky, baked goods to honey. With tastings, recipes and the chance to stock up the pantry, it’s a must for food lovers (AKA all of us).

4. Sweet SA show bags
It’s not the Show without a few show bags in tow… this year, sample a local luxury from Robern Menz and Charlesworth Nuts. With bags ranging from $10, inside you’ll find favourites like FruChocs, Turkish delight, crown mints, dark chocolate almonds… perfect for those with a sweet tooth. Savoury lovers can’t go past the Gourmet Goodie Bag: with  $120 worth of SA food, beverages, and vouchers from local SA producers. Developed by ‘I Choose SA’ ambassador Sam Tucker of Tucker’s Natural in partnership with Foodland, nab yours from stand 5 for a cool $20.

5. Yellow Brick Road
It’s been at the Show for over 30 years, and every year more than 18,000 people follow tradition and the Yellow Brick Road. This year, it’s returning to an all-food format, showcasing South Aussie growers and manufacturers. All you need to do is buy a show bag for $12 from any of the Yellow Brick Road kiosks, then stop at collection points around the Showgrounds to pick up your goodies. Spoiler alert: it will feature loads of local produce like Fleurieu Milk yoghurt, Beerenberg jam, and Bitong To Go beef jerky. The trail encourages kids and adults alike to learn more about where the food comes from along the way.

6. Cheer on a local…literally
There’s no more vocal way to show your support for SA than by cheering on the competitors, animal handlers and breeders who flock to the Show from across regional South Australia. From woodcutting to baking the perfect vanilla slice, alpacas to bulls, there are plenty of opportunities to get up close with producers from across the state.

7. Hop on an EcoCaddy
The SA owned and operated rickshaws are hitting the road to give show-goers free rides from the Adelaide Showground train station, and from the South Parklands carpark, direct to the Showgrounds. Hail them directly, or SMS 0411 180 578 to join the fun. The free I Choose SA EcoCaddy rides will operate on Saturday 2, Sunday 3 and Chooseday 5 September, from 10am until 2pm.
